Goal 14 : Life Below Water

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Oceans play a vital role in sustaining human life on earth. Marine and coastal biodiversity provides sources of livelihood to a large section of our population. Goal 14 enjoins us to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources. Oceans protect us by absorbing greenhouse gases (GHGs) but are fast losing this capacity due to unprecedented rise in acidification. Hence, Goal 14 calls for minimising and addressing the impact of ocean acidification though all means. It focuses on preventing and managing marine pollution, which has been rising alarmingly. Similarly, it calls for arresting overfishing practices, and science-based management of fish resources. It focuses on protection and sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems while increasing scientific knowledge, research, and transfer of marine technology.
